While taking part in a CODE donor reception in Victoria this past October, Executive Director, Scott Walter, and Director of Fund Development, Tony Giampietro, had the pleasure of visiting with long-time donor, Lorne Swannell in his beautiful home. The 102 year-old Mr. Swannell was once a major in Canada’s armed forces where he served for six years in the survey regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery.

After his years of service in the forces, Mr. Swannell worked as a forester and eventually became Chief Forester for the province of B.C.  Mr. Swannell, who has been a CODE supporter for 20 years, is living proof that our donors are not only loyal but that they also come from all walks of life.  Mr.Swannell loves reading books and believes that education is important because it gives people the chance to enjoy books as much as he does. In Mr. Swannell’s words: “Without education, you don’t get far in life”.

On behalf of CODE, thank you Mr. Swannell for helping us provide the gift of literacy to thousands of vulnerable children in Africa and the Caribbean for so many years.
