CODE -Reconstruction of Haiti

CODE and the Reconstruction of Haiti January 14, 2010

CODE expresses its deep condolences to the people of Haiti in the face of the terrible tragedy they are enduring. CODE, and its affiliated enterprise CODE Incorporated, strongly back government and NGO efforts to save lives, help the injured, and supply urgent food, water, electricity and housing needs.  We encourage Canadians to contribute generously to all efforts of registered humanitarian and international development groups.  CODE and CODE Inc also are undertaking steps to address the longer term reconstruction needs of the country’s devastated education system.

Given the scale and severity of this disaster, CODE has responded to a direct request from the UN which was made to our partner CODE Inc., a global shipping and procurement company.  CODE Inc., in cooperation with Atlas Cargo, is working with UN partners on the ground in Haiti to deliver UN requested emergency supplies. Specifically, the UN has asked for tarpaulins, tents, mattresses, mosquito nets, and water sanitation tablets, which  CODE Inc. is  delivering by chartering a 767 from Miami to Haiti.  Atlas Cargo has made additional shipping containers available to move medical supplies, rebuilding materials, food and water from Canada destined for the Haitian Red Cross.

CODE Inc. is a long time friend and partner to Haiti having worked there since 1992 in conjunction with the UNDP and the Government of Haïti in support of elections and democracy efforts.  In fact CODE Inc’s VP, Gordon Sinclair, was scheduled to deliver elections materials to the UN in Haiti on the eve of the earthquake.  Understandably the elections shipments have been postponed but it is Gordon himself with his  strong personal and professional connections to Haiti who  is taking the lead to pull  together the  CODE  relief effort. CODE has a long history of supporting education efforts in Haïti and had just this year initiated plans to work with the Université Caraïbe in a new literacy program with selected elementary schools. Our reconstruction efforts will support these plans.

CODE also wants to express its solidarity with our Honorary Patron, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, and her family during this crisis.
