WHAT IS BUTTERFLY 208?

butterfly 208 is designed to encourage Canadian youth to learn about global issues and Canada's role in the developing world, as well as to become better informed and more active global citizens.

At the heart of butterfly 208 is an annual art and writing contest for Canadians between 14 and 18 years of age. The contest helps youth discover the connection they share with their peers around the world and realize their potential to initiate change.

The butterfly 208 contest is a unique and fun way for youth to learn about, and get involved in, international development. Since it was created three years ago, butterfly 208 has become very popular, thanks in large part to the efforts of our youth ambassadors and many other young Canadians who are making presentations at schools and youth events across Canada. The web site (www.bp208.ca) has become a popular meeting place for Canadian youth interested in global issues. It features a special flash presentation in the b-zone, and stories and photos submitted by youth who have become involved in global issues and are "creating a flap" in Canada and around the world.

butterfly 208 is an initiative of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and is delivered in partnership with Canadian youth, educators and several Canadian and international organizations including CODE.

Six youth and a high school teacher who placed first in the butterfly 208 contest will be jetting off to Tanzania to experience the country's culture, challenges and beauty. The youth, who are from high schools across Canada, also have the opportunity to become youth ambassadors for international development - an opportunity to become informed change agents in their schools and communities and ambassadors for the broader Canadian public.
