Toronto Public Schools Greets a Special Visitor from Tanzania

Mrs. Regina Lowassa, wife of the Prime Minister of The United Republic of Tanzania, visited Fern Avenue Junior and Senior Public School on Thursday, November 30, at the invitation of CODE, and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). A former teacher, Mrs. Lowassa's visit coincided with the announcement by CODE that its Project Love kits of school supplies will be going to Tanzania in 2007-2009.

Next year will also mark the 20th anniversary of Project Love which was initiated in 1987 by a committee of CODE volunteers in London, Ontario. Thanks to the ongoing support of schools, students, teachers, parents and organizations across Canada, as well as the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Project Love is well known across Canada. Every Valentine's Day, Canadian students assemble tens of thousands of packages of school supplies - pencils, rulers and notebooks, with added personal notes of greeting - that are shipped to students in Africa and the Caribbean by CODE's Project Love program.

Last year, 477 schools across Canada were involved. Fern Avenue Junior and Senior Public School contributed 483 Project Love kits in 11 boxes. It is now in its third year of Project Love involvement. Since 1987, over a million and a half Project Love kits have been shipped overseas to developing countries while Canadian students are involved in studying about the countries of destination.
