Overview:
Established in 1990, the Guyana Book Foundation (GBF) has built a consistent record of work in supporting children's literacy in Guyana for over ten years. Long-term funding agreements with CODE have allowed GBF to implement projects throughout the country in the establishment of community libraries, in the distribution of educational materials, in supporting the local publishing sector, and in the training of teachers, library assistants and literacy workers to facilitate literacy development. GBF has also been awarded contracts to implement literacy projects funded by the European Union and the Government of Guyana, and has worked closely with other NGOs, community based organizations, book publishers, booksellers and women's organizations and the Canadian government. Some of these include Varqa Foundation, The North Rupununi District Development Board, Iwokrama International Rainforest Centre, CIDA Gender Equity Programme, The Walter Rodney Institute, The U.S. Peace Corps Guyana, The Catholic Church, The Ministry of Education, and Red Thread Women's Organization.
CODE-Funded Program:
The objectives of the 2001-2006 program are to continue to provide reading materials for children, to increase the ability of children to read, and to build capacity to support a literate environment in Guyana.
