Partnership between CODE and IBBY Canada in support of the Burt Award for African Literature

In 2009, CODE formed an important partnership with the International Board for Books for Youth- Canada (IBBY Canada) as a way to tap into the top writers, editors and others in the Canadian publishing industry to support CODE’s literacy programs and foster professional exchange amongst countries.

Three Canadian writers and/or editors from the IBBY Canada’s network are current jury members for the Burt Awards.

Current and former jury members include renowned authors and editors Hadley Dyer, Peter Carver, Ted Staunton, Sarah Ellis, Sharon Jennings and Kevin Major.

In addition to jurying manuscripts with local jury members, their involvement includes co-facilitating writing workshops to support the professional development of authors to write engaging books for youth, as well as sharing experiences and expertise with local publishers, editors and writers.

A story on Hadley Dyer’s involvement on the 2009-10 jury for the Burt Award in Tanzania was reported in the children’s magazine, Chickadee.

CODE and IBBY Canada share similar goals:  to make high quality books accessible around the world, and to support the publication and training of those involved in producing children’s and youth literature.
