International Literacy Day 2011

At CODE we think that International Literacy Day should be widely celebrated. When children can learn to read and write, they can also gain the critical thinking skills they need to meet challenges and solve problems.

To support and sustain the development of literacy learning, we have developed Reading CODE, a comprehensive readership initiative that works with teachers, librarians, writers, and publishers in Africa and the Caribbean.

Good books brought to life by excellent teachers help children understand and thrive in the world around them – that's the idea behind Reading CODE.

Reading CODE is based on two essential elements:

  • Interesting books, relevant to the readers, and written in languages the readers understand
  • Meaningful engagement with these books through high quality teaching

Join us in taking a moment today to read - and reflect on how literacy enhances your life. Together we can make sure every boy and girl in the world can learn to read and write. Visit us at codecan.org to learn more.
