John Howard Society programs help clients improve their skills

The Pre-Employment Training programs at the John Howard Society of Ottawa help individuals to improve their skills to prepare for employment or to enter college and university programs. While anyone may attend these programs, many JHS clients face mental health issues, addictions, homelessness, and/or are justice-involved. The on-site programs, Skills Plus and ACElinks, a high school equivalency program, have been very successful at aiding many individuals to obtain meaningful employment or further education and training.

JHS discovered that not everyone was able to make the commitments needed or even get to the office to participate in their programs, so they created programs to be run in the community. In 2006 they developed the first outreach literacy program to provide skills training in reading, writing, math and computers at local homeless shelters and dropin centres. These programs grew to help people prepare for employment and to develop essential life skills, such as budgeting and assertive communication. They filled an important service gap in the community, allowing individuals who were not ready for formal programs to develop their skills and confidence.
