Malawi National Library Service

WHO WE ARE:
The Malawi National Library Service (MNLS), Malawi’s national library, ensures citizens have access to relevant information and reading materials for sustaining literacy, recreation, general enlightenment and support of the democratization process.
WHAT WE DO:
The MNLS promotes a reading culture especially amongst children. It works with writers to publish children’s books in the Chichewa language and establishes libraries in primary schools, trains teacher librarians, and stocks library shelves with books from local and international sources.
WHY IT MATTERS:
Local language reading materials are critical for children to effectively learn literacy skills, but few are available in Malawi. The MNLS creates local language learning materials and distributes them across the country. Their books are widely acknowledged to be the most popular with children throughout the country as the titles reflect the culture and perspectives of Malawians.
OUR RESULTS:
The MNLS supports more than 2,000 libraries in communities throughout Malawi. Its effect is strengthened by a close relationship with education officials to ensure that learning is supported nationally amongst teachers, students and their wider communities.
