National Book Development Council of Kenya

WHO WE ARE:
The National Book Development Council of Kenya (NBDCK) is a non-profit organization made up of a national and international network of publishing, library and education-sector stakeholders whose financial, material and technical support contribute to projects and initiatives to promote literacy and a reading culture in Kenya.
WHAT WE DO:
NBDCK influences government policy and practice, and delivers programs that increase literacy skills amongst Kenyan children and youth. In partnership with CODE, NBDCK implements ‘Reading Kenya’ a school-based readership program in Kisii District, western Kenya. The innovation program is improving teachers’ abilities to effectively teach and promote reading, and equipping schools with libraries filled with high quality reading materials.
WHY IT MATTERS:
‘Reading Kenya’ supports the Ministry of Education’s national education plan by demonstrating an effective and practical approach to increase the learning outcomes of students and support the delivery of mother-tongue language instruction for kindergarten to grade 3 students in monolingual communities.
OUR RESULTS:
Since 1997, NBDCK has brought together partners and stakeholders for consultation and programming, thereby creating much needed synergies for the promotion of literacy and the development of a reading culture in Kenya.
