What We Do

In developing countries, we support a network of partner organizations to design, deliver and evaluate quality literacy programs. We also engage Canadians to participate in education initiatives on global issues.

International Programs

Our programs support libraries and teacher training as well as national and local book publishing in about 20 languages in Africa and the Caribbean.

Reading CODE

Reading CODE

CODE’s international programming is based on a comprehensive readership initiative known as Reading CODE. Together with our local partners, we work with teachers, librarians, writers, and publishers in developing countries to support and sustain the development of literacy learning in schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12.  Reading CODE is based on two essential elements: interesting books that are relevant to the readers and written in languages the readers understand; and meaningful engagement with these books through high quality teaching. Drawing on over fifty years of experience, Reading CODE is based on best practices in the teaching of reading, writing, and critical thinking, along with a proven model of successful collaboration with in-country partners, to ensure long-term sustainability of our impact.

Burt Award for African Literature

Burt Award for African Literature

The Burt Award for African Literature is a literary prize that recognizes excellence in young adult fiction from Africa. Sponsored by CODE and made possible by the generous support of Canadian philanthropist William Burt and the Literary Prizes Foundation, the award addresses an ongoing shortage of engaging books for young people while at the same time fostering a love of reading and learning at the middle and secondary school levels. The award is presented in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania. Winning titles are distributed to schools and libraries throughout these countries, making them accessible to young readers.
