About the Country
Liberia is a small country on the West-African coast. For nearly two decades, Liberians endured the destruction of their country, their homes and the lives of family, friends and foe in a highly political long-running civil war that began in the late 1980s. The war claimed an estimated 200,000 Liberians, and left the country's people and infrastructure in ruins. Now, with peace, one of Liberia's greatest challenges is to rebuild its educational system. More than half of the country's schools were destroyed. Generations of children lost their childhoods, and entered adult life without reading or writing skills. Many secondary-school age students are now in primary school, squeezed in among classmates half their age, and many more are on the streets trying to find a future without an education.
