About the Country
Malawi is a long narrow East African country bordered by the deep Rift Valley trench and a large lake. Often called the 'warm heart of Africa', it is known for its extraordinarily friendly people. But despite their warm smiles, one in two Malawians lives on less than a dollar a day. Half of the nation's 13 million people are children. In 1994 the government of Malawi introduced free primary education. Enrollment soared and classrooms filled with children eager to learn. By the late 1990s, most teachers faced classes of more than 100 students - with few resources. Unqualified teachers have been hired to meet demands but the education system remains strained. Books are shared between large groups of pupils. Teachers cannot instruct interactively or spend time with individual students. Two in five Malawians can't read or write.
