About the Country
The landlocked West African country of Mali is known for its breathtaking landscapes; castellated mud mosques, pink sandstone villages carved into cliff faces and rolling deserts. Mali is also one of the world's poorest countries. Nearly three quarters of Malians live on less than a dollar a day. Literacy can help alleviate poverty, but educating Malian children for a brighter future is not an easy task. The Malian government struggles to build and fund schools, with few resources left for reading materials, libraries, or teacher training. On average five books are available for every 1,000 people in Mali. Four of five Malian girls are not in school and it is estimated that 75% of young people cannot read or write.
