About the Country
Senegal has long been recognized as a model African democracy. It has an established multi-party system, a tradition of civilian rule, an internationally recognized arts culture, and a fairly stable economy. However, poverty is widespread in this West-African nation and although primary education is free for all, only about half of Senegalese youth can read or write. CODE has been working in Senegal for more than two decades. Our local partner organization, Bibliothèque-Lecture-Développement (BLD), was created by a group of Senegalese educators and librarians, in the hopes of supporting education and culture through library development and information provision.
