About the Country

map of Tanzania

Tanzania, best known for its exotic wildlife and snow-peaked Mt. Kilimanjaro, is home to about 39 million people from more than 120 different ethnic groups. At independence in 1961, only 1 in 4 Tanzanians could read or write. In spite of being one of the world's poorest countries, the government launched a wide-spread literacy campaign in the 1970s and 1980s.
At one time nearly all primary aged children were enrolled in school. Yet resources have not been adequate to employ qualified teachers or acquire basic teaching and learning materials, especially books.  Many of today's children read and write less than their parents, yet classrooms are overflowing with students eager to learn.
